Travel Purpose: leisure

Positive: We use this hotel as our standard stopover when driving to Italy. In that sense it's reliable and easy, the staff are pleasant, the parking safe, the rooms comfortable and the breakfast great. Safe overnight parking is important to us, and the parking here ticks the box with double-gated entry and plenty of spaces in an extensive underground car park. The staff are easy-going, they generally speak good English, and the front desk is manned all night so there is no hassle with late arrival. The rooms are of course nothing exciting, but they're simple and easy, with comfortable beds, plenty of clean towels, hot water that's actually hot, air conditioning that works, windows that open, and good showers. The buffet breakfast, included in the price, is a real high point, and I find myself looking forward to it. Great selection of hot and cold options, from good fresh pastries to excellent French baguettes, to continental-style cold cuts and cheeses, to cereals with nuts and seeds, to proper butter, to juices and coffee. The location of the hotel is a good compromise: far enough out to be easily reached from the autoroute, yet still in the city and with a tram stop just outside, great for getting into the city centre if you have the time.

Negative: While breakfast is included, parking is not, so budget an extra 15 euros if you're arriving by car. The hotel has a lift but it's pretty slow and can get blocked up at busy times; if you're on the lower floors I would consider the stairs. The showers have a mind of their own, a design flaw where the shower head is on a twisty pipe but isn't secured well enough in its mount, so constantly wants to twist the wrong way. My solution is literally to wrap the base of the shower head in paper so it sits tightly in the mount. While the location of the hotel is convenient, it's not the most exciting part of the town, and there isn't much of interest in walking distance. And we're coffee snobs, so when it comes to morning coffee we usually budget time for a stop at one of the better modern cafe's in town rather than take our chances with the hotel coffee.
